Differences Between Zirconium E-Max

The most fundamental difference is the material used in the construction of the two coatings. Therefore, their properties are also different. In E-max applications, less abrasion than the tooth is sufficient.

E-max application requires more technical precision. In addition, while there are many clinics that apply zirconium, the number of clinics and laboratories that apply E-max is less. Zirconium veneer usually has a white and opaque structure. E-max, on the other hand, is completely glass material. The common feature of E-max and zirconium materials is that both do not contain metal.

E-max and zirconium are used in smile design applications. With both veneers, the patient can achieve a result that is very close to the natural tooth. However, in terms of force balance, zirconium is preferred instead of E-max in long bridges. Each has unique properties that are used interchangeably for different situations.

E-max is superior to zirconium in terms of aesthetics. It can also be applied with much less abrasion than the tooth. In order to choose between E-max and zirconium, a dentist should be consulted.

What is E-max?

E-max is actually a brand name. It is one of the best materials on the market among dental coating materials and is widely preferred in the world. It is prepared in special laboratories by compressing glass ceramics. There are also different brand alternatives, but the most common use is E-max. In addition, some of the materials that make a difference in smile design are laminate veneers and full crowns, inlay and onlay fillings.

E-max Coating

E-max coating is a form of lithium disilicate ceramic.

Its advantages are;

  • It has a durable structure.
  • It is very similar to a natural tooth.
  • Its appearance is semi-transparent. Therefore, it is very difficult to distinguish it from a natural tooth.
  • E-max coating does not contain metal. Even if the patient has gingival recession, there is no metal to be seen.
  • It can be worked with finer workmanship compared to zirconium coating.
  • It is custom made to fit the patient's mouth perfectly.
  • It appears more transparent than standard zirconium coating. Thanks to the ceramic material, it allows more light to pass through and provides a natural appearance.

Zirconium Coating

Zirconium coating is obtained from an element known for its density. This crystal is very durable. In addition, since it can adapt to the human body, it is used not only in the field of aesthetic dentistry, but also in many medical fields.

It is produced by combining two kinds of materials, usually zirconium on the area surrounding the tooth and porcelain on it. While veneers made of zirconium are more suitable for the inner part of the crown, porcelain is preferred for the outer part.

Zirconium veneers are popular because they have a durable structure. However, zirconium crystal also has some disadvantages. Therefore, in areas with missing teeth, zirconium coating is preferred for the posterior teeth, while E-max coating is preferred for the anterior teeth.
