Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Snoring is defined as the noisy sound produced by the vibration of the surrounding soft tissues as air passes through the throat during inhalation.

Sleep apnea means cessation of breathing during sleep. While it is seen in 4 percent of young men, it can be seen in 28 percent of men over the age of 60. Short, fat-belly, short-necked men are at risk. Problems such as a large tongue, a drooping soft palate, a long uvula, a small and posteriorly positioned chin, large tonsils, and nasal concha predispose to sleep apnea.

How do snoring and sleep apnea affect the body?
Since it impairs the sleep quality of the person, it may cause fatigue and weakness throughout the day, and the risk of heart attack and especially nighttime stroke may increase due to less oxygen supply to vital organs such as the heart and brain.

Treatment:
Preventing some factors such as excessive weight, alcohol, which may cause the disease,
Surgical procedures (such as soft palate, adenoid and uvula operations)
Intraoral (Snoring Appliance) and extraoral (CPAP) appliances
CPAP is a machine that delivers compressed air to the mouth during sleep and provides adequate oxygen intake. It can be used in advanced cases where surgery cannot be applied.

The snoring apparatus is an intraoral apparatus used in cases where the soft palate and root of the tongue close the airway and cause sleep apnea and snoring. This apparatus allows the airway to be relaxed by positioning the lower jaw more forward during sleep.

You can get information about the Snoring Apparatus from a specialist physician.
